And Then There Was One

Well…almost. Wayne gets one final ride before he officially retires.

When I jumped into this sourdough adventure, I wanted to experiment with different flours until I found the one that made me happy. So I ended up with Wayne, Stacy, and Garth. At one point I was basically running a sourdough cult.

There were pancake loaves. Flat loaves. Sticky dough. Dough that laughed in my face. Dough that made me cuss enough for my daughter to say, “Mommy we don’t say that!”

Somehow…we made it. Garth has been crushing it, and I’ve realized I don’t need three starters eating flour and taking up cabinet space. I’d rather pour all my attention into one really solid starter than keep juggling a bunch of them.

My kitchen officially looks like a fucking bakery now. There are jars bubbling away, bannetons everywhere, cooling racks covered in bread, and flour in places flour has no business being.

Jeff headed to work with FOUR loaves this week. I figured they’d either eat them or use them as doorstops. Instead? Rave reviews…which is heartwarming and concerning at the same time…why didn’t start this crazy era earlier? I guess I’ve finally figured this shit out.

That doesn’t mean I’m done learning. Not even close. It just means I’m finally at the point where I’m excited to try new things instead of wondering why my bread came out looking like it got run over.

Next stop…bagels. I’ve got my husband making an emergency run to the store for maple syrup and…whatever the hell tsunami sugar is actually called.

Huge shoutout to The Sourdough Hoe. Watching other creators, trying new techniques, and realizing we’re all learning together has been one of my favorite parts of this adventure.

Here’s to Wayne’s farewell loaf.

Party On Garth!
