Here I am, sitting in The Pink Palace preparing for what might be the longest 12-hour road trip I’ve ever taken…with a 2 year old, that is.
Luckily, the adventure there will be broken up halfway with a very special stop to celebrate my son’s birthday. We’ve got a poolside hotel room, reservations for Mother’s Day brunch, my mom, both my kids, and what should be a really great weekend ahead.
The next part of the trip takes us to my mom’s house in Cuchara, Colorado. I still haven’t seen her new place yet, so I’m excited for the adventure, the mountains, and a nice “relaxing” week with a screaming toddler finding her voice while my husband stays home and leaves me to survive the road trip solo.
I do have a few tricks up my sleeve though, and I’m hoping they work….I’ll have an iPad holder for entertainment so I don’t have to worry about her launching it across the car every time she has big feelings (linked here), my favorite backseat monitor so I can see her live on a screen — complete with night vision and attached in a way she can’t reach it (linked here), and of course audiobooks for the inevitable moment the iPad dies and I don’t have a safe place to pull over before the toddler meltdown begins (linked here).
When we finally get to Colorado, there will be homemade meals I don’t have to cook, walks on mountain trails, cooler weather, and maybe even some wildlife sightings. My mom had a bear in her yard the other day, so maybe even more wildlife sightings, from a safe distance of course.
Sounds like some much-needed family time filled with relaxation… and wine, of course, because I’m on vacation.
Moms — if you have any road trip suggestions to keep a toddler entertained for 12 hours, send help in the comments. Look for pictures coming soon, and probably stories about me questioning every life choice somewhere around the Colorado border.
