When do you feel most productive?

I feel productive after a real-ass day of mommin, like more than I would if I were actually working and not doing the mom thing as a full-time job. The days where I’ve fed my kid all the meals, got her a bath, went to the store, prepped dinner, straightened up the house, and still had dinner ready when my husband gets home—to show my appreciation for him giving me the opportunity to watch our daughter grow up.

The days where she hugs me and tells me “thank you, momma.” The days where she wakes up and is really happy to see me in the mornings. It’s all worth it to feel like I’m doing something right.

When I can conquer the day and still sit down to write—which lately hasn’t been coming as easy. I started doing more prompts, which may have burned me out a little, but I did them to keep my mind alive and try to keep up instead of writing things I actually wanted to write about.

Yesterday I took a break… a much-needed one. Leftovers and fast food for lunch. I didn’t clean, I didn’t even make the bed, which is not like me at all. I took a nap with my daughter when she napped. I didn’t open my laptop once. I didn’t even check my stats. I just wanted a day to play with my daughter, even though she goes a million miles an hour and it’s impossible to keep up.

It’s sometimes the days I do nothing that make me feel the most productive, as weird as it sounds, because I got to do the important things. The things I will always remember, even if she doesn’t. Things that are a little funny but frustrating—like her refusing a nap and singing “Let It Go” at the top of her lungs, or spilling water all down her shirt right when I finally get in a groove and have to stop to get her a dry shirt.

I’ll take this messy life for as long as she lets me, and hope she never grows up to be a jerk, still thinks I’m her best friend, and continues to want snacks from me.
