A secret skill or ability I wish I had? Easy. I wish I was a better singer… and could play the piano or guitar. I’m not completely tone-deaf, I can hold a tune. Back in the day, I was actually kind of a bad ass singer, then age happened and I got too cool to be the “choir nerd” in Acapella and stopped taking voice lessons.
I’m kicking myself now, because I never really let that talent go where it could have. Also, let’s be clear—Acapella in 1998 was NOT what it is now. We weren’t out there in cute outfits with choreography and witty commentary. Nope. We wore weird dresses and sang in nursing homes.
I held it down as a Soprano 1, competed, and consistently got top ratings… and then I just… let it go. Same with instruments. I “tried” piano and “tried” guitar, but never fully invested like I did with singing.
So if I’m wrapping up today’s word vomit: I wish I would’ve stuck with singing. Learned an instrument. Figured out how to do both at the same time. Because I honestly think I could’ve paired that with my writing and been a pretty cool chick.
Now I look at artists like Lady Gaga—full performer. Taylor Swift—performer and a writer/poet who knows how to hit you in the feels. Miley Cyrus—because she just casually drops bangers like it’s nothing.
No judgment, I know they’re all younger generation XYZ or whatever… (Forrest Gump is Gen-A… sorry, just needed a quick LOL for anyone I was losing.)
I still love my classics too—The Beatles, The Wallflowers, Stevie Nicks. That kind of music never leaves you, and honestly? Maybe I didn’t completely miss my shot. Friday nights, we wine-d down as a family and absolutely butcher—I mean perform—karaoke in our living room. If my daughter is any indication, the talent might not be gone… it might’ve just skipped a generation, because the other day she told her dad to “go away”… but sang it perfectly to the tune of Let It Go.
I was proud.
